The Literary Guide & Companion to Southern England
Published in Hardcover by Ohio Univ Pr (Txt) (July, 1998)
Author: Robert M. Cooper
Average review score:

The Perfect Companion for the Curious Traveler
The late Prof. Cooper was my kind of tourist set loose in a car in England.

He avoids the M roads and the A roads with single digits. He gives clear directions. He has an eye for the peculiar, the unique, the unsettling. But most of all, he's an enthusiast. He's read the greats and an astonishing quantity of not so great.

He knew his Dickens and Kipling, although I wish he was still alive so I could tip him to something he didn't know about Kipling's sojourn in Rottingdean, Sussex, and its tangible connexion to today: Kipling's familiarity with England's first family of traditional songs, the Copper family. An American who hears Kipling's poetry in the settings of Peter Bellamy will have good reason to reappraise Kipling.

I'm leaving for Kent this week. After reading Cooper, I'll only be bringing him and Ordinance maps along. I won't need anything else.

Little Bighorn Battlefield (Cooper, Jason, Historic Landmarks.)
Published in Library Binding by The Rourke Book Company, Inc. (May, 2001)
Author: Jason Cooper
Average review score:

An excellent tour of the Little Bighorn Battlefield
Having taken a memorable side trip to the Little Bighorn Battlefield, I was impressed with how well Jason Cooper captures the site for this little volume in the Historic Landmarks series. As Cooper points out, the Little Bighorn Battlefield is unique because it is the only battlefield in the world that marks the places when men fell. After the battle in June 1876, when the rest of General Crook's column reached the Little Bighorn, they quickly buried the fallen members of the 7th Cavalry where they fell, marking the spots with crude crosses. Eventually those sites were replaced with markers, some of which identify the specific people who fell there, such as Custer and his brothers. On Last Stand Hill they found Custer and 41 of his men along with 39 bead horses. The other 169 men in Custer's command were killed elsewhere on the battlefield, and seeing the scattered markers, some in small groups, others standing alone, gives you a sense of the battle on a level that goes beyond what you will experience at Gettysburg or the Alamo.

Full page color photographs of the battlefield describe for young readers the battle in terms of the various locations that can be visited. This 2001 book talks about the plans to build a large, walk-in Indian Memorial at the battlefield and notes that the Park Service has started to mark some of the places where Indian warriors fell. Although not as memorable as a visit to the actual places depicted, Cooper does give you a sense for how the way this site has been preserved, with the name change from Custer Battlefield Monument to the Little Bighorn Battlefield and the endeavor to recognize the "other" side of the battle, reflects the ways the United States has changed in our lifetimes. If you are anywhere near that part of the country, then you should visit this site.

When your little monster has a little sibling
This is the perfect book for a young child on the arrival of a sibling. When mom and dad head off to the hospital to have the baby, they give the older sister a toy monster. Little do they guess the trouble Little Monster will cause! Wry illustrations designed as much for parents as for children, and a charming story about how even little monsters can learn to live with tiny babies.

Good study of Quakerism
This is a good study of Quaker faith from a historical perspective. Written by a graduate professor, it is useful both for the student and for a more general audience. It is good for group study, with discussion questions on each chapter.

Wonderful motivator for young cooks
This is one of the best cookbooks written for kids that I have ever seen. The recipies are more than your typical grilled cheese and PBJ: kids are shown how to make such items as yogurt cheese, caramel sauce, and other unique snack items. In addition, the book is filled with basic cooking information presented with humor and many illustrations. This was the first cookbook I ever read, and I still believe it to be a superior childrens' cookbook.
